Just several weeks after moving to Boston, I found a strange
lump near my upper left thigh. My doctor recommended surgery
to remove the lump. But, the removed specimen tested positive
for Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymphatic system. After
consulting with a team of oncologists, including Dr. Takvorian,
and considering their recommendations, I began chemotherapy
treatment. I was shocked, and never imagined that this could
happen to me.
Treatment was difficult, and included intense nausea and fatigue,
coupled with a lowered resistance to infection. However, I
continued to work in Boston, although often from home. I felt
it was important to continue to be active and keep life moving.
I was very fortunate to be under the medical supervision of
Dr. Ronald Takvorian and Dr. Richard Lee, and nursing supervision
of Melanie Poundall. I recently passed my two-year cancer-free
mark in April 2006.
While undergoing treatment, I learned first-hand how MGH
relies heavily on donations to provide superior patient care
and innovative research. Through fighthodgkins.org, my goal
is to generate awareness, raise funds, and create a support
system for those suffering with Hodgkin's Disease. While Hodgkin's
Disease a high survival rate, there are those not fortunate
enough to be one of the 85% who are cured.
